Ski resorts in Europe start to announce their opening dates

Ice cream parlors are the first to open this month and next. A handful of stations open in November, with the vast majority starting in December. We are also looking at the entry requirements in these times of Covid-19. NEW

There are already a few resorts open in the Alps with a bit of skiing on their glaciers – Zermatt in Switzerland, plus Hintertux in Tyrol in Austria.

The first set of Alpine resorts to open for the coming season is in Austria.

Here are the scheduled times for the start of glacier skiing in Tyrol:

Hintertux Glacier: open all year.

Pitztal Glacier: September 25, 2021 – May 8, 2022.

Stubai Glacier: mid-September 2021 – mid-June 2022.

Kaunertal Glacier: September 25, 2021 – June 12, 2022.

Sölden: October 4, 2021 – May 8, 2022.

The Kaprun Ice Zone is expected to open in mid-September, but no specific date has been released.

At PlanetSKI, we hope to visit some of the Tyrolean glacier stations in October.

We have already started our season on the Tyrolean glaciers:

And skied there long before Christmas:

At PlanetSKI, we will closely follow the opening of the stations.

Please note: Ski areas are subject to rapidly changing mountain weather conditions and other factors, which may affect actual opening dates.

This is what we know so far, and we thank Sports House for much of the research.

Fully vaccinated adults do not have to be quarantined upon return from Amber List countries, but they must be tested before their return and two days after their return.

Those who have not had both vaccines must self-isolate at home for 10 days, as well as undergo Covid tests.

Earlier on PlanetSKI, we posted the opening dates for major ski resorts in the United States:

Idaho, United States

But the main question people want to answer isn’t when the resorts plan to open, but rather what next winter might look like.

“At this point it’s really too early to tell because we don’t know what the fall can bring in terms of increased cases, spread of variants and hospitalizations,” said the editor of PlanetSKI, James Cove.

“Most important then is the reaction of the UK government and the governments of the ski nations in terms of travel requirements and restrictions if the medical situation changes.”

“All we can really do at this point is watch and wait, while still being optimistic that there will be skiing and snowboarding this winter.”

The skiing experience will undoubtedly be different, with each country having its own rules for wearing a mask, preventive measures to stop any spread and whether Covid certificates will be required to access bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

At PlanetSKI, we will keep you posted …

The dates we have given are correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of posting, but dates are subject to change due to weather and other factors. If you are planning to visit the resorts, check it out.
