A Eurostar Ski Train will run every week this winter from London to Moutiers & Bourg St Maurice in France. Compagnie Des Alpes, a major ski lift company, has chartered the train from Eurostar and tickets will only be reserved for people going on a package to its stations.
It replaces the old Eurostar ski train and is an overnight, non-stop service departing Friday evening from London – St Pancras.
There is a day return service departing the following Saturday morning from France.
It gives people an extra day on the slopes.
It will operate under the name “Travelski Express” and is a 100% subsidiary of Compagnie des Alpes, CDA.
It will only give access to Méribel and Les Menuires in Les3Vallées, plus La Plagne, Les Arcs, Val d’Isère and Tignes.
It is part of a package including CDA accommodation and lift passes.
The service will be exclusively reserved for Travelski passengers and is not available for booking separately or through other tour operators.
Passengers cannot book the train and then travel to other resorts.
Some details we posted last week, as we reported at the time:
Further information was given by Travelski CEO Guillaume de Marcillac at a press conference in London on Tuesday.
“We know that a high proportion of UK skiers would like to take the train for their ski vacation,” said Travelski CEO Guillaume de Marcillac.
“In addition to being environmentally friendly, it is also easy, comfortable and brings you to the heart of resorts still popular with British skiers.
“Thanks to our exclusive partnership with Eurostar, we are now able to offer an inclusive rail pass that will appeal to many skiers, especially families.
“Our packages allow you to check in at our dedicated office in St Pancras, knowing that transportation to your accommodation will be taken care of.
“We believe this is a very interesting and valuable addition to our existing portfolio of ski vacations in French resorts.”
- There are no beds on the ward, so people will have to sleep in their seats.
- On the outward night train, alcohol is prohibited, but it is permitted on the return day trip.
- Eurostar vouchers for ski-train trips canceled in March and April 2020 cannot be exchanged on the Travelski Express.
Travelski stresses that this is not a one-year strategy, but a long-term project.
If successful, other trains could be installed.
Its goal is to start on December 18, 2021 and run throughout the next season until April 16, 2020.
The train can carry around 600 passengers.
The entrance fee will be £ 640 per person for a family of 4 staying at a CDA property in Tignes.
Ski passes and resort transfers are included.
“It has to be a good quality product at the right price and will be a big advantage for the British skier,” added Guillaume de Marcillac.

The Travelski Express will not stop at Ashford International as the station is closed until 2023 at the earliest due to the pandemic.
It won’t stop at Aime la Plagne either, but transfers to La Plagne ski resort will be organized from Moutiers train station.
The seaside resorts concerned welcomed this decision.
“It is such good news that this service is operational for winter 21-22,” Les Menuires tourism director Marlène Giacometti told PlanetSKI.
“British customers are so important to Les Menuires and we look forward to welcoming them again.
“The packages must be booked through Travelski for the train to work for our customers; they will have a good way to get to our resort, Les Menuires, just above Moutiers, and a more eco-responsible one, so we are happy ”.
In winter July 2020, before people knew if ski resorts in France would open due to the pandemic, Eurostar canceled the ski train and there were concerns that it would no longer work.
This limits the options for direct train travel to the Alps, however, as people can only get to six stations, albeit large and popular.
“As the volume increases, more trains could be put in place, with people going to other stations. Initially, it has to be an efficient and economically viable product, ”adds Guillaume de Marcillac.
“If it works well, there is no reason Eurostar cannot restart its ski train, and maybe one day there will be other tour operators offering such a service.”
This is a new business model for train travel and here at PlanetSKI we understand that Travelski may even charter planes in the future as part of its package model.
Although other UK tour operators are unable to use the service, we understand Travelski is in conversation with respected UK agents such as Ski Solutions to sell the product.
“After the regrettable cancellation of the Eurostar ski trains scheduled for this winter, we welcome this re-establishment of direct service to the Alps offering skiers a choice of low-carbon alternative travel to the French mountains,” said the director General of Ski Solutions, Craig. Burton, at PlanetSKI after the announcement.
“We look forward to hearing more from Travelski and CDA about their program and distribution plans. “

It also wants a positive impact on biodiversity and zero non-valued waste on the same date.
“Faced with an unprecedented health crisis that led to the total closure of our activities for the entire winter season last year, Compagnie des Alpes is working closely with its partners to promote a rapid and robust recovery of the ‘mountain economy,’ said David. Ponson, Director, Mountain / Ski Operations and Outdoor Activities for CDA.
“The Company is taking concrete measures that include the continuity of its investment commitments and innovative and zero carbon projects. Investing in the mountains and beyond, investing in the mountains, these are the key words of our lasting and trusting relationship with our delegate-partners.
PlanetSKI is a big fan of mountain train travel and we have taken the train to the Alps and Pyrenees on numerous occasions.
Here at PlanetSKI, we took the train to Tyrol in the Austrian Alps in 2020 taking the Eurostar to Amsterdam and then changing, all aboard the Alpen Express to Austria
