Where to travel in December

While options are still limited, there are still plenty of fabulous places open for tourism as 2021 draws to a close. Winter sun is a reality in hot spots like newly independent Barbados. Then again, you might want to snuggle up in a cozy chalet in the middle of the British countryside, or hit the slopes for an exhilarating ski vacation in the French Alps. Whatever your tastes, here are some must-see destinations for a December getaway.

France

Christmas is hard to resist in the French Alps, when the snow brings its magic to pretty resorts such as La Rosière in France. Its sunny slopes face the sun and it is easy to cross the Italian border on skis for lunch on the slopes of La Thuile. Peak Retreats is offering 10% off a week’s dining at Alpen Lodge, a four-star ski apartment complex near the main Les Eucherts chairlift, which has a sultry wellness center with an indoor pool and hot tub whirlpool. Offers start from £ 473pp, compared to £ 520pp, based on five people sharing a two-bedroom apartment, and the price includes the Eurotunnel crossing with free FlexiPlus upgrade.

Barbados

You will have the long sandy beaches of the south coast of this glamorous island right on your doorstep when you stay at the Bougainvillea Barbados Resort. Maxwell Beach is located across from the grounds, while the vibrant and authentic Oistins Seafood Market is just a few miles away. Relax in one of the two swimming pools after a drink at the swim-up bar and a session at the Karma Spa. A seven night only room with Tropical Sky costs from £ 959pp in December including flights, saving £ 650pp.

Fuerteventura

The sandy beaches of Corralejo are a short walk from the Bahia de Lobos Hotel, whose low-rise white buildings cluster around a generously-sized swimming pool. Once you’ve explored this seemingly endless stretch of beaches along Fuerteventura’s northeast coast, get lost in the vast sand dunes of Parque Natural de Corralejo. Mercury Holidays is offering a one-week B&B from £ 394 per person departing December 11th including flights.

Scotland

Immerse yourself in the Highlands with a stay at Oldtown Cottage, a pretty stone hole a short walk from Scotland’s vast Loch Brora. The cottage has three bedrooms and a comfortable living room with an open fireplace, as well as plenty of tranquil countryside views. Booked through Cottages & Castles, it offers five days of self-catering accommodation starting December 10 for £ 505, and you can bring your canine friends: up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome for an additional £ 20 each.

Finland

Explore Lapland’s pristine white landscapes on a winter activity holiday, where you can combine cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking. Inntravel offers an active seven-night holiday during Polar Days in Yllas, where you also have the option of fat biking through the surrounding countryside, similar to that of Narnia. The starting price of £ 1,495 per person includes flights, half-board accommodation in the luxurious Yllashumina log cabins and equipment rental, with departures on 5 or 12 December.

Norfolk

Enjoy invigorating walks along Brancaster Staithe or Holkham Beach – or a bit of shopping at Burnham Market – when you stay at Jesters Barn in South Creake. This delightfully imagined barn conversion features an open-plan vaulted living room and kitchen with a stove on one side and wood-burning stove on the other, as well as three bedrooms and a lovely garden. Available through Kett Country Cottages, it costs £ 488 for seven nights of self-catering accommodation from December 10th. Up to two dogs are also welcome, for an additional £ 20 each.
