Ski holiday credit – Sports Lesarcs Mon, 08 Aug 2022 13:35:14 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Ski holiday credit – Sports Lesarcs 32 32 Record bookings for first full season since 2018-19, say UK’s biggest operators Mon, 08 Aug 2022 13:35:14 +0000

The UK’s largest ski tour operators are reporting that new ski holiday bookings for the upcoming winter 22-23 have reached record levels.

Companies say negative media reports about summer travel aren’t impacting next winter’s sales and instead are adding to their portfolios of resort and accommodation options to answer the question.

“We are seeing a record number of new bookings for the upcoming ski season. Skiers and snowboarders are eager to get back on the slopes, especially if they’ve missed ski trips in the past two years due to the pandemic,” said Crystal’s chief commercial officer, Scott Britton, who added “Our projections for the coming season indicate that we will carry the same number of customers as before the pandemic and we continue to expand our product offering to meet all customer needs, with exciting new destinations on the horizon. .

Crystal’s experience is mirrored by other leading companies, including another of Britain’s biggest, Inghams, whose chief operating officer John Mansell has confirmed,

“We know that skiers want to ski! Throughout, Inghams’ bookings for the upcoming season have not faltered. We remain well ahead of where we were at this stage of preparing for winter 2019/20. »

Everyone is of course hoping that next winter will be the first since 2018-19 where no ski area will be closed at any time due to the pandemic.

Most holidays that were postponed when they could not take place in spring 2020 or winter 20-21 have now taken place, most last winter. There are, however, still holidays pending for French ski resorts after the country closed its border to British tourists over Christmas and New Year due to the boom in Omicron at the time, so some d between them must still take place this winter. .

However, tour operators say there are currently many deals to be had despite pressure on available space, new bookings and backlogs, in part because changeover dates fall around Christmas Eve and the New Year, which makes them less popular. . Many offer cheap 5-night stays to avoid having to travel on bank holiday weekends.

How to take a luxury train journey – for less Sat, 06 Aug 2022 05:00:00 +0000

Then there’s all the delicious iconography. Look past the glowing blue of the train’s gleaming exterior and you’ll see the chakana cross, a three-step symbol from Inca times that represents the heavens, earth, and mortal hells.

It’s emblazoned, literally, everywhere you look on this train: the stewards’ uniforms, the pretty towels, the tables, and even the fluffy bathrobes in your marble bathrooms. Elsewhere, understated chic rules the palette. The dining cars – Llama and Muña – are bright and elegant; the lounge car is a cheerful mix of old and new, with a quaint little bar and a grand piano designed for pisco-fueled midnight carols. There is even a spa on board.

You wouldn’t think it, but admiring all that scenery from the lavish observation car whets the appetite – thankfully, as Executive Chef Diego Muñoz ensures passengers are quickly introduced to Peru’s gastronomic delights. When dinner arrives, expect everything from freshwater prawns to hearty filet mignons on a menu designed to the tunes of ancient Inca feasts.

But Belmond saves the best for last. At Lake Saracocha, passengers are treated to a beautiful sunrise, then taken to Sumbay Cave, filled with incredible Paleolithic paintings. Then the train begins to twist and loop back through the desert and lowland grasslands, then on to Arequipa. It’s a trip you won’t forget.

The Andean Explorer, a Belmond train (0845 077 2222; offers sleeper cabins from £1,100 pp. The price includes 24-hour steward service, all meals on board, canapes and drinks, on-board entertainment and excursions.

Everything is very upscale but not at all stuffy, with a relaxed North American comfort ethos trumping any millennial modcons (no Wi-Fi here).

As far as Mother Nature is concerned, you are in for a treat. Expect gigantic grassy plains that branch out into the ice-capped mountains of avalanche country, meandering turquoise rivers that turn into wild cascading rapids in the blink of an eye, and if you look really hard, the occasional grizzly – the train stops if the conductor or your host spots one – and moose along the way. Meals include an array of local classics, from Alberta’s finest cuts of beef to seared snappers sourced along the road. You won’t actually sleep on board, but rather spend the night in Kamloops, Banff, and Jasper, where accommodation comes in the form of rustic alpine-chic or cozy ski-centric retreats.

Back-to-school 2022 sales tax holiday observed August 5-7 Thu, 04 Aug 2022 03:30:06 +0000

Sales Tax Exemption on Eligible Student School Supplies, Clothing, Shoes and Backpacks Priced Under $100 This Weekend in Texas

If you plan to buy clothes or school supplies, waiting until this weekend to do so could prove financially beneficial as this weekend is the annual Texas sales tax holiday.

State law exempts sales tax on qualified items — such as clothing, shoes, school supplies and backpacks — priced under $100, saving shoppers approximately $8 on every $100 spent. The Comptroller’s Office estimates that buyers will save $112 million in state and local sales taxes during this sales tax holiday.

Texas Sales Tax Exemption

“With inflation driving up prices on just about everything, this sales tax exemption offers Texas families a little relief to manage the costs associated with getting kids back to school. As a father of three school-age children, I know how much those expenses can add up,” Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said of the upcoming sales tax exemption.

First introduced in 1999, the Back-to-School Sales Tax Exemption allows Texas buyers (any buyer making a qualifying purchase in Texas) to save money for a weekend by removing the sales tax on eligible school supplies, clothing, shoes, and student backpacks priced under $100. Sales tax exemption dates and the list of tax-exempt items are set by the Texas Legislature.

This year, the sales tax holiday begins Friday, August 7 and continues until Sunday, August 7. It’s good for qualifying purchases in Texas in-store, online, by phone, mail, or custom order provided the qualifying purchase is paid for by 5-7, 2022. Qualifying purchases can be paid by cash, check, by card or wire transfer to a Texas business. Those ordering items that need to be shipped should keep in mind that shipping costs are factored into the overall cost, which must be less than $100, and the tax exemption only applies. to eligible items purchased in Texas. The ship date does not count as long as the purchase is processed during the tax-free holiday weekend.

For example, if a buyer enters their credit card information on an online shopping website on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at 5 p.m. to purchase eligible school supplies, but the school supplies will not ship until Friday August 12, and will not arrive until Tuesday, August 16, the purchase still qualifies for the exemption. However, if the credit card charge is declined by the payment processor at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, and the buyer does not resubmit payment by Monday, August 8, the purchase is taxable.

If qualifying items are purchased August 5-7 as a rain check, layaway, or final payment on a layaway, payment at that time would also be tax-exempt regardless of when. where items are shipped, arrive in stock, it should be tax-free, according to the Texas Comptroller of Accounts.

So what items under $100 are zero-rated during the holidays? Most shoes and clothes sold for less than $100. The exemption applies to each qualifying item sold for less than $100, and there is no limit to the number of qualifying items that can be purchased at one time.

For example, if you buy two shirts for $80 each, each shirt qualifies for the exemption because each costs less than $100, even though the total purchase price is $160.

Cloth and disposable cloth masks meet the definition of a garment and are exempt from sales tax during the upcoming sales tax holiday. However, industrial or medical grade masks (N95 or other masks designed as personal protective equipment) or other similar personal protective equipment are not exempt during the sales tax exemption. If a cloth or disposable cloth face mask is sold with a filter, the mask is exempt during holidays; however, replacement filters are taxable.

British businesses are part of the Saudis’ bizarre mirror city plans – but it comes with risks Sun, 31 Jul 2022 05:00:00 +0000

It is certainly convenient for Western leaders to let the past slip away as they scramble to fight runaway inflation and prepare to drastically reduce the use of Russian fuel supplies.

If ever there was any doubt, the energy crisis has shown just how dependent the world is on Saudi oil. With the second-highest levels of proven reserves, Riyadh’s place at the helm of OPEC – the cartel of oil-producing nations that manipulates prices by coordinating production – has given it a powerful position as a producer” swivel” which can actually dictate the price. of a barrel of crude.

In today’s market, where Russian oil is facing mounting sanctions and benchmark Brent crude has held above $100 a barrel for much of the year, analysts say only Saudi Arabia and its neighboring United Arab Emirates has the capacity to increase production. OPEC and its allies, including Russia, are due to meet on Wednesday.

The Saudi leader knows he may never have such an opportunity again. Last year the country produced nearly 11 million barrels of oil per day, the highest on record, and in 2020 Riyadh has commissioned state oil giant Aramco to undertake a multi-billion dollar plan to increase capacity at 13 million.

But it can go as far as possible. In a speech last month, Prince Mohammed revealed that a capacity of 13 million, which he expects to reach in 2027, could be the limit – despite previous Saudi claims it could reach 15 million.

In a speech in mid-July, he said “after this, the Kingdom will no longer have the capacity to increase production”, and called for new global investment in green technologies.

The figure represents a major warning that even the world’s top producer has its limits, and shows Riyadh’s waning desire to try to push capacity even higher as a global transition away from the fossil fuels can finally pick up speed.

The ‘peak production’ threatens to set off a doomsday clock for the Saudi petrostate – but Prince Mohammed is still in a position many other leaders would envy as they battle the global effort to cut carbon emissions.

The country has an incredible amount of cash on hand and the crown prince probably has decades in his head ahead of him – enough time to lay down ambitious plans. He also doesn’t have to worry about trivial things, like winning elections, that keep many leaders awake at night.

“It’s hard to imagine when he’s king where a significant challenge could come from,” Quilliam says. “So as we sit now, unless something extraordinary happens, he’s going to be king and he’s going to be there for quite a long time.”

It’s no wonder, then, that Prince Mohammed dreams big.

Britain’s leading role

While the Crown Prince released more details on the Mirror Line this week, he also offered crucial details on funding.

The first phase of the project is expected to cost 1.2 trillion riyals (£264 billion), half of which will come from the PIF.

Saudi Arabia will then look to other sovereign wealth funds in the region, as well as private sector investments and a stock market listing in 2024, to raise the rest of the money.

With the PIF’s deep pockets behind him, the Crown Prince can expect to generate plenty of interest in the project. Steve Schwarzman and Masayoshi Son, chief executives of Blackstone and SoftBank, are among the high-profile figures who have already endorsed the plans.

The Kingdom has also turned to British expertise. In 2020, the government chartered flights from London to Saudi Arabia to bring in personnel for Neom. The following summer British architects were invited to tender for the design phase.

]]> Remains found in Selway Bitterroot area tentatively identified Wed, 27 Jul 2022 21:59:40 +0000

Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton told us Wednesday that the remains found in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness area this week have been tentatively identified as a Missoula Missing Man.

Holton provided these details:

“It was actually the night before last, the Forest Service Trail volunteer crew, some of the supervisors found human remains and bones about five miles from the Bass Creek trailhead on the Bitterroot Selway,” said the Sheriff Holton. “We had deputies and investigators hike yesterday who recovered the remains and processed the scene.”

Holton said he and his department were confident they knew the identity of the remains, based on previous extensive research.

“At this point we’re pretty confident that we can tentatively identify the person as Philip Stokey,” he said. “He was the subject of a fairly intense search and rescue operation in August 2020. We put many days and many hours of labor and helicopters and dogs into this search, but we didn’t we were never able to find it.”

Holton repeated that he was sure of the identification.

“Based on the evidence and the things the guys found at the scene yesterday, as I said, we’re pretty confident that we can tentatively identify him,” he said. “We will obviously be working with the Montana State Crime Lab to confirm all of this.”

Holton said the Montana State Crime Lab in Missoula will handle official identification of the remains.

“We have good pathologists at the crime lab in Missoula, and, and hopefully, we can put some things together with that and find a solid cause and manner (of death).” he said. “It’s bittersweet. It’s really nice to be able to tell friends and family and maybe give them some closure. But on the other hand, it’s still bad news for anyone.

Stokey, 37, was a resident of Missoula. He was reported missing in August 2020.
